Governor-Elect Jeff Landry Urges Voters to Cast a Ballot One More Time This Year

Jeff Landry Endorses Nancy Landry for Secretary of State, Liz Murrill for Attorney General, John Fleming for Treasurer

LAFAYETTE, La. — Governor-Elect Jeff Landry is reminding voters they can cast a ballot one more time, in the Louisiana runoff election, to ensure their voice is heard.

The runoff election is just a few short weeks away and it is critical Louisiana voters make their voices heard. The Secretary of State, Attorney General, and Treasurer are important positions that will impact the direction of Louisiana for years to come,” said Governor-Elect Landry, “In some communities there are important local elections as well.”

I encourage Louisiana voters to support Nancy Landry for Secretary of State, Liz Murrill for Attorney General, and John Fleming for Treasurer so we can push the reforms I spoke about during my race for Governor. Having a team ready and able to help support our goals is important. Nancy, Liz, and John all have the experience and judgment necessary to be successful in moving Louisiana forward,” said Governor-Elect Landry.

Voters who cast mail absentee ballots should receive their runoff ballots soon. Early voting is November 3rd through November 11th. The runoff election is November 18th, just days before the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Kennedy on Education Board: I'm Embarrassed

Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) today criticized the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) for proposing lower graduation standards for high school students in Louisiana. Under the new standards, students would be eligible to graduate even if they fail the state’s Graduate Exit Exam several times.

Key comments from Kennedy’s remarks include:

“This is a massive step back. This is an announcement to the rest of America that Louisiana has given up, that our kids are not smart enough, they’re not good enough—even when we give them second or third chances to be able to get a ‘D’ on the Graduate Exit Examination. As a result, we have got to give them a special extra points project so they can get a diploma that’s not really a diploma.

“The people behind this ought to hide their heads in a bag. Our kids are better than that. Every one of my kids in Louisiana can learn. Sometimes they need a little bit longer, but it’s not going to do them any good to give them a diploma that they can’t read.”

“This rule change is going in front of the Louisiana legislature for an oversight hearing in the Senate Education Committee and the House Education Committee. I hope that either the Senate or the House—and hopefully both—will say no.”

Kennedy’s full remarks are available here.

Chairman Gurvich: How Much Longer Can New Orleans Survive This Idiocy?

I do not know from whence the phrase “delicious irony” originated, but we certainly had a recent case of it right here on the streets of New Orleans, which I guess is itself part of the irony. Irony, of course, is a situation which occurs when something intended to have a particular result, ends up having the opposite result. What made it so delicious? Well, read on:

I am speaking, of course, of the recent car hijacking of Jason Williams, one of the most prominent members of the Soros-backed progressive district attorney club. You know, the same Jason Williams who was elected by New Orleanians way back in 2020, when woke progressivism was, however briefly, the spirit of the age. At the time it was all the rage for the New Orleans citizenry, or at least enough progressives and liberal simpletons, to display their affinity for progressive ideological buy-in by electing Jason Williams as the District Attorney of New Orleans.

Mr. Williams left us in no doubt that he was a progressive- it was perhaps the most prominent aspect of his campaign. He promised a complete departure from the policies of his predecessor, Leon Cannizzaro, to whom the city owes a debt of gratitude for running a good shop on his twelve year watch. Nevertheless, during the election Cannizzaro was faulted for his outmoded, presumably racist, “tough on crime” approach which, God forbid, actually sought to incarcerate violent criminals and serial petty offenders.

And so Jason Williams was elected to be the District Attorney of New Orleans, even though he had no prior prosecutorial experience and had only briefly served as a temporary judge many years earlier. In fact, he had never managed anything other than his small law firm (where he continues to work, presumably part-time), and one or two aides while serving on the New Orleans City Council.

The fact that Williams was grossly unprepared for the job obviously did not matter to the progressive wokesters and their useful idiot allies among the city’s elites, and the tragic results predictably followed. Criminals were released in droves and fewer and fewer charges were filed against those arrested by the police. But the rot didn’t stop in the district attorney’s office.

The New Orleans Police Department, already one of the worst performing police forces in the country, was further demoralized by the knowledge that the district attorney now required a very high level of evidence before accepting any case, no matter how heinous the crime. To add insult to injury, Williams had simply stopped accepting charges for most minor crimes like shoplifting, trespass, threats, etc., although policemen knew that they themselves would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law whenever the opportunity presented itself.

And so we arrive at the case of Raymond Rochon, an eighteen year old one man wrecking ball of civilization, and his most unfortunate choice of victims on the night of October 16, 2023. Rochon had numerous outstanding arrest warrants (four as a juvenile and three as an adult, that we know off), and police had been well aware of his penchant for carjacking at the point of a gun. Why, they even had his fingerprints on several of the cars. There was no rational excuse for Rochon still being at-large on the streets of New Orleans, unless you buy in to the progressive ideological claptrap that the criminal is a victim of society.

But at large he was, due in no small part to the intimidation and demoralization of the NOPD, due in no small part to the efforts of the crime victim himself, Jason Williams. And therein lies the delicious irony- even fiction writers can’t make up this stuff. Rochon knew at once why he had finally been apprehended, commenting to the police “I know why y’all are here- y’all’s people…” That is to say, he knew he had carjacked the wrong guy.

Which of course begs the question: What would have happened to Rochon had he carjacked you or me? I think we all know the answer to that one- Rochon would still be out there committing several carjackings a week. It is almost a certainty that sooner or later, he would have killed or seriously injured someone, but in Jason Williams’ world, we are apparently expendable casualties in the cause of woke progressive ideology.

The existential question for the inhabitants of this once great city is how much longer they will permit the present situation to continue?

The Republican Party of Louisiana Endorses Nancy Landry for Secretary of State

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nancy currently serves as the First Assistant Secretary of State. Previously, she served as a State Representative for House District 31 for 11 years. The LAGOP is proud to endorse Nancy, and urges all voters to support her candidacy for Secretary of State. Election Day is November 18, and early voting will run from November 3-11, with the exception of Sunday, November 5 and Friday, November 10 (in observance of Veterans Day).

LANDRY: Thank You Louisiana!

We did it!

I am both proud of and humbled by the outpouring of support that our campaign for Governor received, leading to an historic and unprecedented win on Saturday night. As I said from the very beginning, this race was never about me — it has always been about us. And by standing together for our common cause, we successfully won a jungle primary against 14 opponents — proving that our State is united in a vision for the future. But now, the real work begins.

Since we launched our campaign over a year ago, we hit the road listening to you about the core issues that must be addressed if we’re to restore our State and improve our circumstances. The biggest issue is crime, of course, with Louisiana leading in all of the worst rankings.

Through our decisive victory, the people of our State have said that they are tired of being known for violence, rape, and murder. We’re tired of leading the country in property crime, carjackings, and domestic violence. And we’re exhausted by the surge of opioids, fentanyl, and overdose deaths that are destroying our families. We must fix these issues immediately to restore safety in our communities. That is why I consider our election a mandate for change — and change is what we will have.

The other hot topics being discussed around the kitchen tables across our State are taxation, insurance rates, our education system, and the economy. It is high time that Louisiana has a government as good as its people — one that serves our parishes, protects our sovereignty, and ensures that a high quality of life is not only affordable but also accessible. We must also be able to compete with the other Southern states that are booming right now; but to achieve a brighter future, we must make different decisions than leaders in the past have made, and that we will.

To restore Louisiana, we must ensure that our children are able to read and do basic math, that opportunities will exist for them to make a living and raise a family, and that they will be backed by a government that solves problems rather than creates new ones. We must also support our law enforcement and other first responders as we tackle crime and restore the rule of law. That means we must refuse the temptations of armchair politics and theoretical solutions and pursue the answers that will actually work.

By embracing reality over feel good theories, we will begin to build our State back up in a way that works for all of our people and not just a few. And as a result, our small and larger businesses will begin to prosper again, our economy will gain traction, and others will choose Louisiana as an investment in their future — which will benefit us all. Yes, these are lofty goals; but they are attainable ones, if we work together. Remember: no one thought that the people of our State would end this race with the first vote — but we proved them wrong.

And I know that if we continue as one team, we will accomplish great things. We can create a better, safer, and more prosperous Louisiana — not just for ourselves but also for our future generations to come. And so I thank you all again. Our historic victory is due to all of you who supported our efforts in time, talent, and treasure. And we will continue to win thanks to those who remain committed to the revival of Louisiana values, courage, and ingenuity.

Sharon, I and our team look forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting to work fixing our great State — because this is our moment.

Kennedy, Cotton, McConnell introduce bill to freeze transfer of $6 billion in assets to Iran

“Just weeks after the Biden White House made shameful negotiations to transfer $6 billion to Tehran without congressional review, the Iranian regime sponsored a devastating terror attack on Israel, killing and taking American citizens hostage. . . . Allowing the transfer to go through would further enable and embolden Iran’s proxy armies.”

WASHINGTON – Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) joined Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) in introducing legislation to freeze the Biden administration’s transfer of $6 billion in assets to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Just weeks after the Biden White House made shameful negotiations to transfer $6 billion to Tehran without congressional review, the Iranian regime sponsored a devastating terror attack on Israel, killing and taking American citizens hostage. Congress must ensure that the Biden administration freezes these assets before they flow to the Islamic Republic. Allowing the transfer to go through would further enable and embolden Iran’s proxy armies,” said Kennedy.

Iran is the world’s worst state sponsor of terrorism. In addition to funding Hamas’s devastating terrorist attacks against Israel, the regime’s proxies have attacked dozens of American targets in the region in recent years. The Biden administration’s decision to let Iran access the $6 billion immediately freed up other money for the regime to fund its attacks in Israel. The Biden administration should immediately re-freeze the funds,” said Cotton.

The path of resources, training, and lethal weapons from Tehran to terrorists throughout the Middle East is crystal clear. On Saturday, it enabled cold-blooded killers like Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad to perpetrate the deadliest day of violence against Jews in decades. The civilized world must re-impose serious consequences on the regime that aids and abets murderous evil against innocent Israelis. The United States must lead that effort by our example, and freezing Iranian assets is an important first step,” said McConnell.

In August, Kennedy raised concerns to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen about the administration’s move to circumvent congressional authority and potentially enter into a nuclear agreement with the Iranian regime by transferring assets in exchange for U.S. prisoners.

Jeff Landry's monumental victory gives hope to the people of this state that the days of rampant crime, poor education, and a disappointing economy are over. Jeff Landry campaigned on the message of delivering a government in Louisiana that is as good as her people, and that is exactly what he will do.

In his victory address on Saturday, Governor-elect Landry stated, "Our state is blessed with the most hardworking, courageous, fun-loving, wonderful people in the world. We care about our values, we are strong in faith, we care about our friends, family and our community. Now it is time to start putting smiles on the people of this state."

Republican successes spread down the ballot on Saturday. Congratulations to Nancy Landry, Liz Murrill, John Fleming, and all of our Republican candidates who secured a primary victory and to those who will finish strong in November! With your help, Nancy Landry will be our next Secretary of State; Liz Murrill will be our next Attorney General; John Fleming will be our next Treasurer; Republican majorities in the State Legislature will continue to grow.

LA FREEDOM CAUCUS SWEEPS ELECTIONS

Despite Best Efforts of Establishment to Defeat Founding Members

BATON ROUGE—The Louisiana Freedom Caucus (LAFC) is honored to announce that all of its Founding Members were successful in their re-elections to their House seats or in their run for the Senate in the primary elections held on October 14. We have also made substantial gains in elections for new members with several more in both the House and the Senate on great footing as we move into the runoff period.

“Louisiana has the greatest people in the world. We have the most abundant natural resources, we have a culture that other states envy, but we have never had a great government. With the election of Jeff Landry and the overwhelming success of the conservative Republicans across the board, we are now set to change that. It’s not going to change overnight, but for the first time in its history, Louisiana finally has a team in place to chart a course that shakes off the chains of the past and makes Louisiana’s government as great as its people,” said Senator-elect Alan Seabaugh, Chairman of the Louisiana Freedom Caucus, who was elected to Senate District 31 with 54% of the vote after a staggering amount of special interest money was spent in an attempt to take out the founding chairman.

“Current Republican leadership of the House and Senate worked in lock-step with John Bel Edwards. Their political games have left Louisiana with serious problems. But on October 14, voters made it clear that the reign of the RINOs is over! 2024 will begin with solid conservative Jeff Landry as governor, with a supermajority of Republicans in both the House and Senate, and with a public that has grown intolerant of smoke and mirrors. New Louisiana is dawning!” said Rep. Beryl Amedée, Secretary-Treasurer of the Louisiana Freedom Caucus, who ran unopposed in District 51.

“The outcome of this election couldn’t be any clearer: our citizens yearn for a departure from the establishment politics that have too often favored a privileged few. This shift toward conservatism highlights the public’s longing for leaders who truly prioritize their needs, pushing back against the status quo of establishment politics. The Louisiana Freedom Caucus shares my commitment to ensuring that the voices of Louisiana’s cherished citizens don’t just echo in the halls of power but drive genuine change for our beloved state,” said Senator-elect Blake Miguez, Founding Member, Louisiana Freedom Caucus, who won his election garnering 61% of the vote in Senate District 22 in the primary against four opponents.

“The people of Louisiana have entrusted us with an opportunity to turn the tide here in our beautiful state. We have a sacred duty to honor that trust. I love the people of my district and I look forward to serving them for another four years. Let’s get it done!” said Danny McCormick, Founding Member, Louisiana Freedom Caucus, who won re-election in House District 1, garnering 66% of the vote.

Kennedy, Grassley, colleagues issue warning to perpetrators of domestic terror threats

“To any bad actors who dare cross onto American soil seeking to exploit the crisis in Israel and wreak havoc domestically, our message is clear: Any threat to the United States will be pursued and suppressed swiftly, forcefully and to the fullest extent of U.S. justice.”

MADISONVILLE, La. – Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today joined Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) in issuing the following joint statement warning potential perpetrators against making any domestic threats inspired by Hamas’ attacks in Israel:

“The Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel are despicable and depraved. As we mourn the hundreds of lives lost, including at least 27 U.S. citizens, we must also remain vigilant in our efforts to safeguard our communities at home. The first duty of government is to protect the national security of our citizens and keep Americans safe.

“To any bad actors who dare cross onto American soil seeking to exploit the crisis in Israel and wreak havoc domestically, our message is clear: Any threat to the United States will be pursued and suppressed swiftly, forcefully and to the fullest extent of U.S. justice. Your vile and hateful acts have no place here. The United States will relentlessly defend against domestic threats while supporting Israel as it fights to eradicate Hamas’ campaign of evil.”

Scalise: I Never Came Here For A Title

Today, House Majority Leader Scalise (R-La.) announced to his colleagues his withdrawal from the race for Speaker of the House. Following his announcement, he spoke to the press about his decision. See his full statement below:

Leader Scalise’s remarks:

“I know we've been following this. It's been quite a journey and there's still a long way to go. I just shared with my colleagues that I'm withdrawing my name as a candidate for the Speaker-designee.

“If you look at — over the last few weeks — if you look at where our conference is, there's still work to be done. Our conference still has to come together and is not there.

“There are still some people that have their own agendas and I was very clear: We have to have everybody put their agendas on the side and focus on what this country needs. This country is counting on us to come back together. This House of Representatives needs a Speaker and we need to open up the House again.

“But clearly, not everybody is there, and there [are] still schisms that have to get resolved. I never came here for a title. I've had some great titles. I am the Majority leader of the House, and I love the job I have.

“I've had big challenges in my life. I've been tested in ways that really put perspective on life. Really the 2017 shooting — when I didn't know if I was going to make it out alive — taught me what's important in life and that's my family, my faith, and I'm blessed beyond belief. I have absolutely all the right perspective and I still have a deep, deep passion for making sure we get our country back on track and get our conference fixed again.

“But there are some folks [who] really need to look in the mirror over the next couple of days and decide: Are we going to get it back on track? Or they're going to try to pursue their own agenda? You can't do both and I think we're going get there. I was very clear in that room that, ultimately, we have to come together for the country.

“But I never came here for a title, and it's much bigger than me, and it's much bigger than anybody else. And nobody is going to use me as an excuse to hold back our ability to get the House opened again. We still need to get a Speaker and I'm going to continue to push as hard as we can to make that happen as quickly as it has to happen. But it wasn't going to happen.

“It wasn’t going to happen today. [It] wasn't going to happen tomorrow. It needs to happen soon. But I withdraw my name and I appreciate the interest you all had along the way. We still have work to do. We have to get this done.

“I cut no deals with anybody. There will be a lot of people that look at it, but it's got to be people that aren't doing it for themselves and their own personal interests, and the folks that have their own personal interests in mind shouldn’t be interested in it.”

Gurvich: Why Liz Murrill Should Be Our Next Attorney General

Liz Murrill’s experience, hard work, and proven commitment to conservative causes are unmatched by any other candidate, and that’s why she’s the only candidate for Attorney General endorsed by the Republican Party of Louisiana. In the final days of this primary campaign, I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a bit more about this impressive woman’s lifetime of accomplishments. Where to begin?

Well, first things first: Liz Murrill is a homegrown Louisianian through and through, reared in Lafayette, where her dad practiced medicine and her mom was a school teacher, later a professor at UL. After graduating from public school, Liz attended LSU and obtained a degree in Journalism. She then briefly moved to Florida to work as a reporter for a Gannett paper, before succumbing to the allure of her native state and returning to LSU to attend law school.

While a law student, she became the editor-in-chief of the law review, and after graduation clerked for several prominent Louisiana judges before joining the law school faculty for twelve years. She also attended Pepperdine University and graduated with a Master of Laws degree.

In 2015, she served on Jeff Landry’s transition team and then joined the Office of the Attorney General. She was hired as the Civil Division Director and in 2016 was promoted to become Louisiana’s first Solicitor General. The Solicitor General is the third highest official in the office and the lawyer who actually tries most of the major cases which come through the Attorney General’s door. She’s P. O. S. T. certified (that’s police lingo for well-trained), and has a lifetime concealed carry gun permit.

Liz’s legal accomplishments as our Solicitor General merit special praise. Sure, she has handled hundreds of cases and argued before the United States Supreme Court five times (she also served a fellowship there), but what does that mean for the average folks in Louisiana?

Perhaps most importantly, she successfully blocked the Biden administration’s insane moratorium on the sale of federal land and offshore oil and gas leases, which moratorium was destroying Louisiana’s oil and gas industry. She successfully fought the retroactive application of the unanimous jury ruling, which would have released hundreds of criminals convicted of felonies. In the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, she played a key role in blocking the federal government from coercing or colluding with the big tech companies to suppress or censure free speech (that is, conservative speech). That case is pending before the United States Supreme Court right now, and we hope to soon have some happy news for you.

And did I forget to mention that along the way, Liz Murrill married and raised four wonderful boys with John Murrill, her husband of thirty years? She’s run in several marathons and served as a cubmaster for her son’s scout troop. In the aftermath of Katrina, she organized and led her church’s disaster response group. She manned a women’s crisis hotline for three years, and worked as a volunteer in a women’s shelter. Somehow, she even found the time to advise emerging democracies about how to design their legal systems. She now resides in Baton Rouge to be close to her work, where she lives with her husband and little Havanese dog, Jewell, and enjoys going after redfish in her Outback kayak.

Top-of-the-class student, journalist, attorney, marathon runner, professor, administrator, volunteer, wife and mother. Yes, Liz Murrill is all of those things, plus one more: She is an ardent PRO-LIFE, PRO-2ND AMENDMENT conservative with UNMATCHED LEGAL EXPERIENCE, who’s passionate about protecting our FREEDOMS OF SPEECH and RELIGIOUS LIBERTY. She’s been out there on the front line for years, fighting for Louisiana values and our way of life, and that’s why we need her to be our next Attorney General!

This Saturday, October 14th, please vote for Liz Murrill for Attorney General, #33 on the ballot.

LANDRY: Vote for Louisiana

Election Day is Saturday, October 14

There is something intangible about Louisiana — a mystery that cannot be held, seen, or even named but exists nonetheless. It is an almost mythic quality held up by morning fog in a duck blind, or held down by the sweltering summer heat. Travel the world and tell people where you’re from and you’ll surely encounter a stark shift in demeanor, a booming smile, and a surge of excitement as some stranger declares, “Oh, I love Louisiana!” They might go on to praise our hospitality, our food, our music, or even our culture; but deep down we know all of these wonderful things exist because of our greatest resource: the people who call Louisiana home.

Hundreds of years ago, many of our ancestors found this emerald gem of land and navigated its bayous, swamps, and rivers. They built cities and trading posts, nurtured the fertile soil, and created a unique and multifaceted civilization unlike any other. There may be glimmers of France, Spain, Cuba, West Africa, Sicily, and Anglo-Saxon traditions woven into this place alongside our Indigenous tribes, but Louisiana is much greater than the sum of its parts. She is the jewel of our own creation, as vibrant and changing as the waters that ebb and flow along her banks.

Yet, for years, our State has been in a dark phase. Poor leadership, corruption, and bad policies have transformed our innate potential and true abundance into violence, sickness, and death. Instead of admiring our resiliency and fortitude, visitors and residents alike now fear for their safety.

Our education systems have been overwhelmed simultaneously by woke policies and increasingly violent youths. Our sheriffs and police departments are struggling under an influx of hardened criminals under the age of 18 alongside mental health problems that sadly lack support. Families and businesses alike are crumbling under the weight of Bidenomics, unfair flood insurance rates, and forever increasing taxation that never seems to benefit anyone — except the power players in Baton Rouge. And while there are those of us who stubbornly refuse to leave, our State is still losing 30,000 people a year because of violent crime and a lack of opportunity.

The truth is, the people of this State are tired of just surviving and trying to vote our way out of problems that only seem to get worse. And as a result, many might choose to sit out of this election, to retire to the seclusion of the deer stand, drown out their disappointment at a football game, or refuse to opt-in because they’re convinced that things will never change and “you’re kidding yourself to think otherwise.”

But for better or worse, we get the reality we choose. And for the past decade, at least, we have ultimately chosen the situation we find ourself in today — by not voting, by not speaking up, and by choosing not to participate. The other Southern states are booming economically because their people made different decisions — they chose to vote for better leadership, to have their voices heard, and to make their presence known. They decided that their land, their people, their heritage was worth fighting for, improving, and building anew. They made an active decision to change the status quo and reach for success. Now, that decision is up to you.

If you’re reading this, chances are you love Louisiana as much as I do. You want better schools and opportunities for our children, safer communities, and competitive jobs that will enable you to live comfortably — not make impossible decisions between food, fuel, and insurance. Hurricane after hurricane has taught us that we can survive anything Mother Nature throws at us; but this State cannot survive indifference. We either choose to fight for what we love, or we will succumb to the rot of stagnation and inaction.

I am ready to lead us forward towards a brighter and more prosperous future; but as I said from day one: I am not running for Governor — we are. So this Saturday, I ask you to participate, not for me but for yourself, your family, and your future with this land. Vote for us. Vote for Louisiana, and make our greatest known.

Because our State has always been great because of you, and you decide her fate whether you show up or not.

JOHNSON: "LOUISIANA SAYS NO TO DC POLITICS"

Pineville, Louisiana- In the wake of recent political turmoil in Washington, D.C., State Representative Mike Johnson reaffirms his commitment to keeping the influence of D.C. politics out of Louisiana. Johnson voiced his concerns about the chaos unfolding in the nation's capital and its potential impact on the Pelican State.

"This week, a small portion of Republicans worked with Democrats to remove the Speaker and paralyze the government in Washington, D.C.," Johnson said. "This same model was used in Baton Rouge four years ago to select a Speaker. We cannot let that happen again."

Recognizing the need for unity and integrity in the selection of the next Speaker of the House in Louisiana, Representative Johnson established a unity pledge for all members of the Louisiana House Republican Delegation. This initiative aims to ensure that the state's leadership remains focused on the best interests of Louisiana and its citizens.

"We have received a tremendous response from the incumbents in the house and candidates for open seats." Johnson continued. "We are on the verge of positive change for our state. With the chance of a Republican governor and supermajorities in both chambers, we will have an opportunity to fundamentally change our state for the better - we cannot squander this!"

State Representative Mike Johnson, echoing the sentiments of many Louisianians, calls upon ALL Republicans in the House and ALL Republican Candidates to commit to the Voters of Louisiana to unify in the selection of the next Speaker of the House of Representatives in Louisiana.

"Louisiana deserves leadership that puts the needs of our state first," Johnson concluded. "By pledging to uphold the values of unity and integrity in this important decision, we can ensure that Louisiana remains a beacon of strong, principled governance.

We have this opportunity to get it right or sink even further into a disappointing failed institution. I know that Jeff Landry is determined that our people deserve better than what we’ve gotten.”

LAFAYETTE, La. —Today, Jeff Landry announced that he has received the endorsement of former U.S. Congressman Billy Tauzin.

Read Congressman Billy Tauzin’s full endorsement below.

"A Governor for our time. We don’t have lots of time to turn things around: to end this growing lawlessness, to lift this state from the bottom and rebuild economic opportunity, enough to give the children of our state a reason to stay and to prosper here, with us, rather than in some other state. I believe Jeff Landry is positioned to be our next Governor, but even if he were not, if he was well behind instead of well ahead, I would be endorsing him today.”

“Louisiana is just too deep in a hole to do less than elect a new governor, who has been trained and skilled on both the state and national level to serve all of us, and lead our state to a better place… while there is still time. Jeff is committed to do just that. Have you noticed how the bipartisan national association of both Democrat and Republican State Attorney Generals chose Jeff to lead them. How with his prior service in Congress he has gained national recognition as one who gets a job, does a job, and does it well. And we desperately need a doer and a true leader today, one who understands just how hard this will be.”

“We, current and past elected officials, get to know one another pretty well. I’ve come to know Jeff, not from the biased media or from his political opponents, but on a man to man personal relationship. I trust him. I have been honest with him, too. While I’m prepared to help him be a great Governor of our state, we who support him will want to see real progress, real reform, even though that may require hard choices to be made. Louisiana is near a tipping point of no return. We have this opportunity to get it right or sink even further into a disappointing failed institution. I know that Jeff Landry is determined that our people deserve better than what we’ve gotten. He has my full endorsement and my prayers for his and our success.”

LAGOP Supports Steve Scalise for Speaker of the House

BATON ROUGE, LA— The Republican Party of Louisiana (LAGOP) today announced its full support for Representative Steve Scalise to become the next Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Rep. Scalise is the clear choice to unite all Republicans on our path to victory in 2024. He understands what is at stake. In his time as Majority Leader, Minority Whip, and Majority Whip, he has consistently opposed Joe Biden and the Democrats' radical agenda while promoting a conservative legislative agenda. Most importantly, he is by nature a uniter who can bring all Republicans together.

The decision for the four hundred and thirty five members of the U.S. House of Representatives is clear. No other candidate has the experience and the demonstrated courage of Steve Scalise. Please cast your ballot for our next Speaker, Steve Scalise.

LANDRY: A Matter of Life and Death

No matter how many times I repeat the statistics, the reality of Louisiana’s crime epidemic and broken criminal justice system are best known by those in the thick of it. We can highlight that three of Louisiana’s major cities are some of the most dangerous in the country, that New Orleans is ranked as one of the most dangerous in the world, and that our first responders and criminologists are underpaid, overworked, and in desperate need of support.

But for the past eight years, the Edwards Administration has chosen to put criminal rights over victim rights. By choosing to measure only the incarceration rate rather than its implications to the State’s crime rate, the Governor has created a disheartening trend he intends to push all the way to the fast-approaching end of his tenure. Whatever the intentions, this has resulted in a legacy of supposed savings and surplus at the very expense of Louisiana lives.

Thankfully, my office – in collaboration with District Attorneys – was able to convince the 19th Judicial District Court to dramatically decrease the Governor’s chances of granting clemency to our State’s most violent and heinous criminals. Instead of allowing the Edwards Administration to cut the line, bend the rules, and manipulate various timelines to expedite clemency hearings, the Court upheld Louisiana law. This ultimately means that the Governor may not cheat the system in his waning days in office – ensuring that crime victims can still hang onto hope of getting the justice our State promised them.

I have consistently sided with the victims of these horrible crimes, even organizing a hearing at the State Capitol so that loved ones of those tortured, raped, and murdered were able to tell their stories, express their views, and finally have their voices heard. While our detractors declared this a political stunt, we all know better; it was necessary for the Legislature and people of our State to hear inconvenient truths, no matter how painful they are to hear.

Capital punishment is reserved only for the most heinous crimes known to man, which are done knowingly and with a rational mind. In total, there are 41 capital offenses that are punishable by death, including mass murder, contract and torture killers, killers of children, and terrorists. More importantly, it is constitutional – which is why Solicitor General Liz Murrill and I have worked diligently to remove obstacles in the courts and effectively clear the path for a future Governor to move forward with promised executions.

Perhaps that is why this Governor has been so eager to dismiss the rule of law and infuriate a large number of district attorneys, judges, first responders, and victims. If we’ve learned anything over the past eight years, it’s that the Edwards Administration often sides with the most dangerous, the most violent, and the most destructive over the innocent, the injured, and the brutally slaughtered. They have prioritized hug-a-thug policies over what’s fair, righteous, and just. And in his final months in office, the Governor seems determined to insult the victims of horrible crimes even further, rather than leave quietly and allow others to clean up his mess.

But with our court victory for victims, I have hope that the tides are turning and that justice will finally be served. I am also proud to have joined numerous district attorneys throughout Louisiana in upholding the rule of law and ensuring that clemency reviews for death row offenders are conducted in an open, transparent and legal process.

What our State needs is leadership, the kind that we exhibited in this situation. By standing up for the most vulnerable and protecting the rule of law, we supported victims and justice — not carnage and chaos. As a result, the people of our State got one step closer to having a criminal justice system that fulfills its promises.

Kennedy on saltwater intrusion in southeast Louisiana: Government dealing with problem

“I am worried about this because about a million of my 4.6 million people in my state depend on this river for drinking water . . . but I want the Senate and I want my people to understand that their local, their state and their federal governments are dealing with this problem.”

WASHINGTON – Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) today addressed the saltwater intrusion into fresh water sources in southeast Louisiana.

Key comments from Kennedy’s remarks include:

“Now, I am an optimist who worries. I am worried about this because about a million of my 4.6 million people in my state depend on this river for drinking water. And we're in the middle of watching the saltwater come up the river and we don't think it's going to stop coming up the river until sometime around, I don't know, the end of October, maybe. We could be wrong, but I want the Senate and I want my people to understand that their local, their state and their federal governments are dealing with this problem.”

. . .

“First, I want to thank President Biden. President Biden declared a disaster declaration, which allows us to get the assistance of FEMA and I'm very, very grateful for that.

“Number two. Our Corps of Engineers is involved. They're very able people. Our Corps of Engineers, below the city of New Orleans, has built an underwater dam.”

. . .

“Number three, the Corps of Engineers and FEMA are both prepared, if necessary, to deliver us fresh water, if we need it, by barge. And if you ever wonder about the might of the federal government, and particularly our Corps of Engineers—again, I can't thank them enough—they can deliver up to 36 million gallons of fresh water a day. So, thank you, Corps of Engineers, and I want my people back home to know that so they won’t be worried.”

Background:

The Mississippi River is experiencing record low water levels. That allows saltwater from the Gulf to creep upriver into the freshwater areas that provide drinking water to parts of southeast Louisiana.

The only long-term solution is for the upper Mississippi River Valley to receive ample rain, which would raise the level of the Mississippi River and push the saltwater back into the Gulf.

Until then, Louisiana, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) are investing in mitigation efforts. The Corps estimates these efforts will last at least three months.

This September, saltwater started seeping over the Mississippi River’s man-made sill, the equivalent of an underwater levee, in Plaquemines Parish.

On Sept. 27, 2023, FEMA declared this a federal emergency. Accordingly, FEMA is authorized to provide assistance for emergency measures for Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes.

Saltwater is expected to reach New Orleans later in October. The Corps is currently raising the underwater sill in Plaquemines Parish by 25 feet in order to slow the progress of saltwater creeping up the Mississippi River.

Fresh water is also being barged into water treatment plants in affected areas.
