Kennedy statement on Israel, Netanyahu address

“Hamas is working with Iran, and Iran is hellbent on developing a nuclear weapon and pointing it at America and our allies. . . . America needs to keep supporting Israel as it destroys Hamas and working with Israel to defeat Tehran’s terrorism and its evil aspirations definitively. I’m thankful that Prime Minister Netanyahu came to join us in that effort today.”

WASHINGTON – Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) today released the following statement upon attending Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech was exceptional. Unfortunately, mere months after the October 7 massacre, some people in Washington still seem confused about why America supports Israel. Too many people—many of whom descended on the Capitol today—still apparently believe in diversity, equity, inclusion and the right to kill Jews. That bloodlust has never been—and will never be—what most Americans believe.

“Louisiana still understands that the debased people who slaughtered more than 300 young people at a peaceful music festival are the bad guys. The odious men who raped women next to the bodies of their dead friends don't deserve to be on this planet. The evil we saw unfold when Hamas butchered Israeli civilians is indefensible. And we all saw it.

“Hamas terrorists brutalized thousands of people, including Americans. Hamas is still holding eight Americans in Gaza. We believe five of our fellow citizens being held there are still alive. President Biden and Vice President Harris need to bring them home, and every day until then they need to condemn the Hamas terrorists who have murdered, kidnapped and abused our fellow Americans

“Israel has both the right and the responsibility to defend itself. This world will be a safer place for Americans and Israelis alike when Hamas ceases to exist.

“Let's not forget that Hamas are the wicked people who are using civilians as human shields. Hamas are the bloodthirsty people who dug up their people’s water pipes to turn them into rocket launchers.

“The truth is that the Palestinian people, the people of Gaza and the Israeli people all suffer because of Hamas. The truth is that Hamas brutalized Israeli citizens and then ran home to hide behind their women and children, using them as human shields.

“The only way to stop the cycle is to eliminate Hamas. Hamas doesn't want a permanent cease fire. After all, they had that on October 6. Hamas wants America, Israel and every decent person on earth to let them catch their breath so that they can reload and take aim again at innocent Americans and Israelis.

“Hamas is working with Iran, and Iran is hellbent on developing a nuclear weapon and pointing it at America and our allies. Iran is the author of chaotic, senseless suffering across the Middle East, and Tehran wants nothing more than to annihilate Israel and take its terrorism global. America needs to keep supporting Israel as it destroys Hamas and working with Israel to defeat Tehran’s terrorism and its evil aspirations definitively. I’m thankful that Prime Minister Netanyahu came to join us in that effort today.”

Governor Landry Orders Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of Firefighter Corey Comperatore

Baton Rouge, LA- Today, Governor Jeff Landry signed an Executive Order to fly flags at half-staff for Corey Comperatore who was killed at a Pennsylvania rally for Donald J. Trump. The flags of the United States and the State of Louisiana shall be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol and all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on July 18, 2024. Executive Order is attached.

On July 13, 2024, former fire chief Corey Comperatore lost his life when he shielded his family with his own body when shots rang out from the rooftop of a nearby building. He dedicated his life to serving his country as a United States Army Reserve soldier and a fire chief at the Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department. He will be laid to rest today, July 18, 2024, in Freeport, Pennsylvania, with friends and family honoring his legacy.

“Exercising our First Amendment rights should never come at the cost of the ultimate sacrifice, even when attending a political rally. Mr. Comperatore is a hero, and Louisiana is proud to honor him today and every day for his selfless acts,” said Governor Landry.

OPINION: Opposition to Credit Card Competition Act

I am writing as a concerned resident of Lafayette, Louisiana, to express my strong opposition to Democrat Senator Dick Durbin's Credit Card Competition Act (CCCA). If this law is passed, it will have severe repercussions for our community's access to affordable air travel and could endanger the sustainability of our local airport.

In Lafayette, our flight options are already limited and often come with a high price. Many of us rely on credit card rewards earned through co-branded airline cards to make air travel feasible. These reward programs are vital for us, enabling visits to family, pursuing career opportunities, and supporting our local economy through tourism.

The potential elimination of these reward programs, as major airlines fear due to the CCCA, could lead to less activity in our local market. This shift would not only inconvenience us but also pose a significant risk to the viability of our local airport.

Regional airports like Lafayette Regional Airport are essential for connecting our community to the wider world. They are crucial for local businesses, tourism, and overall economic growth. Let’s not pass any legislation that would stifle this important fixture of our community.

We need Senator Kennedy and Senator Cassidy to oppose the CCCA and focus on solutions that promote healthy competition without undermining the accessibility of air travel for communities like ours. Preserving credit card rewards programs is critical for maintaining affordable flight options and ensuring the sustainability of regional airports.

Sincerely,

Rob Broussard

Kennedy to Louisianians following assassination attempt on Pres. Trump: “The American people deserve answers” and “We’ll figure this out together”

“. . . the American people deserve answers to that, but let's wait and get the facts. . . . We'll figure this out together. In the meantime, let’s all respect each other’s humanity.”

Watch Kennedy’s full statement here.

MADISONVILLE, La. – Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) today made the following statement regarding the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa.

“Why? That's what most Americans are asking themselves today, ‘Why did President Trump almost lose his life?’

“First, there aren’t words in English, it seems to me, to describe how horrible the attempt on President Trump's life was. I know it could’ve been worse, but it was really, really bad. And, inevitably, Americans today, as I said, are asking themselves, ‘Why?’

“Look, America hasn't been happy for a while, and this crosses all political spectrums. It costs more to live in our country today. Many people on both sides of the political spectrum are upset about the open border. Crime is . . . still bad. People are scared. They see the rise of China and the rise of Iran and the rise of Russia, and they instinctively know that [those regimes’] domination creates a world that's not safe for democracy or America. And this has led to disagreement in our politics. That disagreement is inevitable.

“It's been especially sharp because I think it reflects two things: It reflects the unhappiness that I've talked about, but it also reflects the fact that all Americans, they care deeply about their families, and they care deeply about their country.

“I don't have an answer for why, but what I will respectfully suggest is that we wait and try to figure out why together. Don't make assumptions. Don't jump to conclusions. I've already heard some people saying, ‘Well, the shooter was left-wing,’ or ‘the shooter was a right-winger,’ or ‘it was all political.’ We just don't know. Maybe he wasn’t left-wing or right-wing. Maybe he was just a broken wing. Maybe he was a nut. Maybe he was mentally ill.

“I've also seen people pointing fingers at our government officials about how could they have allowed this to happen. Well, the American people deserve answers to that, but let's wait and get the facts.

“So, I just wanted to say that—it was in my head and on my heart—to the people of America and the people of Louisiana: We'll figure this out together. In the meantime, let’s all respect each other’s humanity.”

Sen. Kennedy continues to pray for the loved ones of Corey Comperatore, who attended the rally with his family and died while protecting his wife and daughter.

“Becky and I are praying for the family of the attendee who died this evening at Pres. Trump’s rally as well as for the quick recovery of all others who are injured. Political violence has no place in America,” said Kennedy Saturday as he thanked God for protecting Pres. Trump and others that evening.

TRUMP MOMENTUM

“Trump Widens Lead After Biden’s Debate Debacle” read The New York Times headline, and the headline was right (a welcome change from The New York Times)!

In fact, a series of polls show President Trump with a commanding lead over Joe Biden and any Democrat that may take his place. The Democrats are even in a place where they are bragging about polls showing them losing. As we mentioned earlier this week, President Trump is playing offense all over the electoral map. This isn’t just about Crooked Joe Biden. The Democrats have failed our country, and in November, Americans will hold them responsible at the ballot box.

LA Voters End Schizophrenic Gov't, So Can Other Red States

By Michael Reagan - Newsmax

Saturday, July 6, 2024

Up until this legislative session Louisiana suffered from a strange phenomenon found in some red states.

Louisiana had a solidly Republican legislature, but was saddled with a Democratic governor. This problem is easier to solve than the more common red state conundrum: A conservative legislature with a RINO (Republican In Name Only) governor.

Louisiana voters came to their senses and elected a solid conservative in Republican: Gov. Jeff Landry.

What a difference that has made!

As noted left-adherent Barack Obama observed, "Elections have consequences."

And as The Washington Times concluded, "Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, with the help of his solid Republican majorities, signed off on a laundry list of legislation that spells out a Republican agenda that could ping the national GOP’s radar."

This development brought some measure of joy to your authors.

Now we can point to someone other than Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., as an exemplar of using government for conservative ends.

Here a just some of the laws passed and signed by Landry that return a measure of sanity to living in Louisiana:

  • $3 billion cut from the state budget

  • Universal school choice

  • Constitutional carry

  • A ban on vaccine mandates

  • A ban on ranked choice voting

  • A ban on sanctuary cities

  • State police can now arrest illegal immigrants

Other improvements made to the Bayou State include:

Public (read government) schools are forbidden to teach DEI (Diversity Equity Inclusion) indoctrination, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Teachers must also use pronouns that match the sex on a student’s birth certificate.

Local governments are banned from passing firearms restrictions exceeding state law.

Protesters demonstrating outside private residences can be fined.

Liability is limited for people in fear of their lives when rioters illegally block a road.

Major expansion of RICO and racketeering law applied to organized riots.

Two abortion-inducing drugs will be classified as controlled substances.

Men pretending to be women, and vice versa, are banned from using facilities that do not match their birth certificate sex.

That’s quite a return on a vote in a single election.

Landry, though, didn’t do all this on his own. "Last October, Louisiana elected a conservative governor and the Louisiana Freedom Caucus doubled their size in the legislature," the Louisiana Freedom Caucus tweeted.

Over 27 new laws were authored by members of the Freedom Caucus and passed by the legislature.

Making a red state red is a two-step process.

Elect a genuinely conservative governor and fill both houses of the legislature with equally conservative members, while expelling the Chamber of Commerce 'conservatives' that have plagued red states for so long.

That’s what Louisiana and Florida have both done.

"Andy Roth, president of the State Freedom Caucus Network, wrote on X above the list of new legislation Friday, 'I’m officially declaring it now — Louisiana is the new Florida!'"

As we wrote earlier, this should be the goal for conservatives.

Make your red state as red as possible.

Create a cultural environment so hostile to leftists that they move to the nearest blue state.

Louisiana and Florida are starting down this path.

Readers outside those states need to ask their state leadership what’s holding them back?

Gov. Landry Supports Gov. Abbott’s Request & Announces Operation Lone Star Extended to Include Engineer Support

Will use unspent money from pre-approved fund

Baton Rouge, LA- Today, Governor Jeff Landry announced with the support of Senate President Cameron Henry, Speaker Phillip Devillier, Brig. Gen. Thomas Friloux, and GOHSEP Director Jacques Thibodeaux that Operation Lone Star is being extended. During the initial mission that ended earlier this month, the LANG spent approximately $2.2 million of the $3 million previously approved. As such, Texas submitted an additional request for engineer soldiers that will utilize the remaining $800,000. The LANG will remain in Texas until mid-November when the final contingent of Soldiers begins movement back to Louisiana. Attached are letters from Governor Landry and Speaker DeVillier and President Henry.

“As the Biden Administration repeatedly ignores the crisis on our southern border, the Louisiana National Guard continues to step up and assist our neighbors in Texas as they work to protect our citizens and secure our country’s border. I am grateful to the Louisiana National Guard for their hard work defending and securing our nation’s border,” said Governor Jeff Landry.

“We strongly support the continuation of the Louisiana National Guard’s aid to the State of Texas through Operation Lone Star with the remaining $800,000 from the legislature’s initial allocation of $3 million. We understand the importance of protecting the Southern border and will continue to work closely with Governor Landry on this important matter,” said Senate President Cameron Henry and Speaker Phillip DeVillier.

“Our soldiers are trained and ready to continue supporting Texas and the border operation. The engineer soldiers are tasked with missions that support their assigned individual and collective training tasks,” stated Brig. Gen. Thomas Friloux, Adjutant General of Louisiana.

“Louisiana is proud to support this critical mission protecting our nation’s border,” said GOHSEP Director Jacques Thibodeaux. “Texas is one of our closest emergency management partners and Gov. Landry has remained strong in his backing of this mission along the border.”

Debate Domination

It wasn’t even close. President Donald Trump won the debate in a landslide! Even CNN’s instant poll gave President Trump the resounding victory, and it’s not hard to see why. President Trump offered a clear vision for our country of a booming economy, a secure border, and peace through strength.

  • President Trump delivered the greatest debate performance in history to the largest voter audience in history, while Joe Biden was too incompetent to defend his record on inflation and the invasion at the border.

  • The contrast was clear: President Trump made the case for how he can improve the lives of every American, while Joe Biden lied, invented stories, and couldn't articulate a single plan to make things less expensive or secure our southern border.

  • Biden should not receive a participation trophy for standing upright for 90 minutes.

  • He should be fired for being unable to explain why he's ruined our country.

  • Joe Biden had no excuses for his disastrous performance.

  • He took a weeklong vacation at Camp David - all while ISIS terrorists run loose in the United States - and Biden still didn't have any answers.

  • The question isn't whether Joe Biden can make it through the next 4 years - it's whether Joe can make it to the election.

  • If we want to save America, if we want to make life better for the American people, if we want to bring back the American Dream, we need to Fire Joe Biden and Hire President Donald J. Trump.

  • Everything is more expensive under Joe Biden:

    • Mortgages are up 90%.

    • Gasoline is up 50%.

    • Bread is up 41%.

    • Eggs are up 40%.

    • Baby food is up 28%.

  • Joe Biden has caused Americans to lose $28,000 per household in inflation costs.

  • Inflation was up 1.4% when President Trump left office.

    • Cumulative inflation is up 20% under Joe Biden.

  • Joe Biden is running a $2 trillion federal budget deficit this year.

  • The unprecedented crisis at the border is due to Joe Biden.

    • Joe Biden has allowed 10 million illegal migrants to cross the southern border.

      • There are now over 150k missing migrant children in the United States.

      • There are ISIS terrorists at large in the United States.

      • There is a 43% increase in violent crime victims under Biden, much due to the Biden Migrant Crime Wave sweeping across our country.

  • Biden’s weak leadership has emboldened America’s adversaries.

    • 13 service members died because of Joe Biden's incompetence during the disastrous withdrawal of Afghanistan.

    • Hamas launched an assault against our greatest ally in the Middle East – Israel.

    • Russia has started war in Ukraine and Biden has failed to stand up to Putin.

    • President Trump will safeguard America and preserve peace through strength.

    • President Trump was the first American leader since Ronald Reagan not to start a war.

  • Don’t forget - 10% for "The Big Guy.”

Bottom Line: Joe Biden further embarrassed the United States with last night’s debate performance, and he is too weak to serve as Commander in Chief. The contrast between President Trump and Biden is clear—it's time to retire Joe Biden once and for all and allow President Trump to Make America Great Again.

Killers Continue To Abuse Biden’s Open Border Policies

Joe Biden’s open border policies have led to innocent Americans being raped and slaughtered, yet Biden still refuses to secure the border.

What you need to know:

  • 170,000-plus illegal immigrants were encountered attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border in May.

    • That’s approximately 5,500 illegal aliens crossing the border every single day.

    • That’s a 185% increase from the average number of May apprehensions during the Trump administration.

    1. 8,642 unaccompanied children were encountered.

    2. 82,189 illegal immigrants were encountered from countries outside the Northern Triangle and Mexico, showing that Biden's crisis is global.

    3. At least 90 people on the terror watchlist have been encountered trying to enter the U.S. between ports of entry this fiscal year.

  • Biden’s fake executive order has done absolutely nothing to secure the border.

  • The blood is on his hands as U.S. citizens are raped and murdered by illegal aliens who have no legal right to be in the country.

  • Now, Biden is doubling down on his orchestrated invasion by offering mass amnesty to a million illegals already in the country — putting them, and their families, on the fast-track for citizenship and the public benefits that come with it.

  • Biden doesn’t care about the American lives that will forever be destroyed by the illegal criminals he is importing.

  • He also doesn’t care that law-abiding taxpayers, crushed by inflation, are forced to pay for free food, housing, and healthcare for illegals.

  • It doesn’t have to be this way.

Bottom Line: Biden’s open border policies aren't compassionate; they are deadly. On day one, President Trump will seal the border and begin the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.

Let's Get Ready To Rumble

“The media wants to lower Joe Biden’s debate performance bar so low he gets a participation trophy simply for standing upright for 90 minutes, but make no doubt about it - Biden will be highly prepared and alert on debate night, relying on the same perfectly calibrated dosage used to deliver his widely praised 2024 State of the Union Address or his 2012 thrashing of Paul Ryan in the VP debate.

“The true benchmark for Thursday’s debate should be whether or not Joe Biden can defend his disastrous record on inflation and the out-of-control border invasion versus President Trump’s unquestioned first-term record of success, and if Biden can speak for himself without the overt participation and interference of two CNN moderators.

“If given a fair opportunity to present his vision for America, President Trump will lay out exactly how he plans to improve the lives of every American suffering from everything becoming too expensive and every community being turned into a border community thanks to Joe Biden’s incompetence.” — Steven Cheung

What you need to know:

Bottom Line: Americans, get your popcorn ready. The time has finally come for Joe Biden to defend his awful record and destructive agenda.

Terror From The Border

More unvetted aliens from third-world countries continue to pour into our communities. This is the direct result of Biden’s border bloodbath.

  • In a horrifying new report, we learned that eight suspected ISIS-K terrorists were released into the U.S. by the Biden administration after they illegally crossed the southern border earlier this year.

  • We know that more terror suspects than ever are crossing the border illegally into the United States.

    • A few weeks ago, we learned that a suspected ISIS terrorist from Uzbekistan was allowed to live freely in the U.S. for nearly two years after being released by the Biden administration after illegally crossing the border.

  • Per reports, the eight suspects had received “full vetting” before being released.

  • This shows how nonsense the term “full vetting” is when it comes to the border crisis.

  • Reminder: It is impossible to vet the hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens Biden is allowing into the country because the ability to vet them does not exist.

    • Every time Biden and his administration claim there is an effective vetting process of the illegal aliens he is releasing into the country, they are flat-out lying.

    • There is little to no cooperation from many countries around the world.

    • There is no database to cross reference, no documents to consider – and that’s assuming those records would even be adequate if they were shared.

  • In fact, the inability to vet illegal aliens has allowed the vicious transnational criminal gang Tren de Aragua to infiltrate the United States, according to a new report from CNN.

    • Tren de Aragua — a brutal, ruthless Venezuelan gang — has been terrorizing Latin America for years.

    • Now, they've infiltrated the U.S. via Biden’s open border and they're coming to a city near you.

  • Every day, American citizens are paying the price for the resulting Border Bloodbath.

Bottom Line: For the sake of our nation’s security and the preservation of democracy for future generations, America needs President Trump back in the White House.

Biden’s Border Disorder

Joe Biden’s executive order doesn’t secure the border. It codifies the invasion – an invasion he aided and abetted from the start.

  • Crooked Joe Biden couldn’t care less about the illegal immigrant invasion in our country.

  • Nothing he announced this week will “shut down” the border or “limit” asylum claims.

  • He did the opposite, in fact — by establishing a weekly minimum number of illegal aliens allowed into the country and expanding eligibility for his fraudulent asylum scheme.

  • In short, Biden is trying to make the border invasion permanent.

  • Biden’s new order will fast-pass the entry of even more illegal aliens into the country by simply routing them to ports of entry — where they’ll be processed and released into the country to await adjudication years from now.

  • It’s yet another expansion of illegal immigration under Biden, who has already offered mass amnesty to hundreds of thousands of inadmissible aliens.

  • Biden's failed policies created the crisis at the border, and this new executive order is too little too late.

    • In Biden's first 100 days, he took more than 94 executive actions on immigration, including halting construction of the border wall and ending the successful "Remain in Mexico" policy.

    • By his three-year mark, Biden had taken 535 executive actions related to immigration.

    • Biden’s new FY 2025 budget proposal calls for eliminating $50 million in border wall funding.

    • Illegal immigrants have confirmed this: "The border is open…everybody believes that the border is open. It's open because we enter. We come in, free, no problem…We came illegally."

  • More than 9.6 million illegal immigrants have crossed the border since Biden took office.

    • For 38 straight months, monthly encounters have been higher than even the highest month seen under the previous administration.

    • April’s 179,000-plus encounters is a 272% increase from the average number of April apprehensions during the Trump administration.

    • On day one, President Trump will seal the border, stop the invasion, and send Joe Biden’s illegal aliens back home.

  • Despite Biden's promise of a "fair and humane immigration system," his open border policies aren't compassionate; they are deadly.

  • Biden could actually shut down the border any time he wanted.

  • But all today’s action will do is bring more unvetted aliens from third-world countries directly into our communities.

  • The only way to end the bloodbath is to re-elect President Trump in November.

Bottom Line: How loud does the terror-threat alarm need to sound before Joe Biden reimplements President Trump’s policies? America needs President Trump back in office.

LA FREEDOM CAUCUS THANKS GOV. JEFF LANDRY FOR SIGNING 10 COMMANDMENTS BILL INTO LAW

BATON ROUGE—The Louisiana Freedom Caucus is grateful to Gov. Jeff Landry for signing the Ten Commandments bill into law. This is not only a religious document, but also the foundational document of the time-honored legal traditions of the entirety of Western Civilization.

“The Ten Commandments comprise the very foundation of our laws in America today. They are a vital part of the American creed,” said the bill’s author Rep. Dodie Horton, founding member of the Louisiana Freedom Caucus. “Given all of the junk our children are exposed to in the classrooms today, it is imperative that we put the Ten Commandments back into its historic position.”

“The Ten Commandments were the primary force in American education for nearly three centuries before a reckless 1980 court decision, Lemon vs. Kurtzman, blocked teaching this history in classrooms,” Horton continued. “The very first school textbook in America included the Ten Commandments and was published in 1690, the New England Primer. It was used throughout the United States and became the textbook of American education.”

“This law is the first of its kind in America since the 1980 Lemon case was rightly overturned. We have every confidence that it will survive legal scrutiny,” Horton said.

Kennedy: Sometimes Washington doesn’t understand real America

“Sometimes we get it wrong in Washington, Mr. President, in terms of our perceptions of what's going on in real America.”

WASHINGTON – Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) spoke on the Senate floor about how informed Louisianians are and how they get their news.

Key remarks from Kennedy include:

“Every time I leave Washington, D.C., and go back home to America, I am reminded of how parochial Washington, D.C., can be—how removed it can be, how unaware it can be.

“We often hear people in this city, where our Capitol sits, say, ‘Well . . . the American people just don’t understand.’ ‘The American people’—you often hear—‘just don't know what they’re talking about. They don't know what we know. They don’t read the news. They don't keep up like we do.’”

. . .

“So, recently, Mr. President, I conducted a poll [to] test that point of view. . . . About 70% of my people in Louisiana, Mr. President, follow the news every single day.”

. . .

“Thirty-nine percent of the people in Louisiana—70% of whom follow the news every single day—get their news from cable TV.

“Another 21.1% get their news from morning and evening broadcast television—not cable—local television news and national television news.”

. . .

“Twenty-seven percent of my people get their news primarily from the internet.”

. . .

“Radio news is also important in my state. Seven percent of my people . . . listen to radio news as their primary source of news.”

. . .

“Only 4% of my people receive their news today from newspapers.”

. . .

“Sometimes we get it wrong in Washington, Mr. President, in terms of our perceptions of what's going on in real America.”

BAYHAM: Paying for the Consequences But Not The Cause

Written by State Representative Mike Bayham - District 103

Louisiana has one of the highest rates of obesity in the U.S., affecting every age group, including people over age sixty-five.  But in Medicare, where seniors and disabled people in Louisiana get their healthcare, people don’t have coverage for weight loss medications. Medicare is prohibited from offering medicine for weight loss for people with obesity, a contributing cause of the costliest and most debilitating conditions in the U.S., but freely spends on the consequences of those diseases, including expensive hospitalizations and surgeries. But some of these costs and consequences fall back on the state of Louisiana.

Obesity elevates the risk and cost of having diabetes, heart disease, bone and joint issues, and cancer.  The federal government, by choosing not to cover medicines that could help people with obesity lose weight, puts the consequences of the condition untreated on the taxpayers. These consequences included earlier entry into nursing homes for people with obesity, which falls back on states in Medicaid. Not providing coverage for safe and effective treatment for obesity in Medicare not only shortchanges seniors and disabled people who use Medicare, but it is also unfair to the states who bear consequences of untreated obesity. Future generations have a chance at setting the health system on a more solvent path, if the federal policymakers would make the right decision to help seniors lose weight in Medicare.

The prohibition on coverage for obesity treatment in Medicare was established twenty years ago when there were limited treatment options. There are now six FDA-approved medicines to help people lose weight.  The exclusion of weight loss in Medicare is outdated. However, removing that exclusion depends largely on the perception and estimates of the cost to the federal government. But, the costs of untreated obesity are not counted by federal policymakers, such as nursing home costs, which fall back on the state of Louisiana as people with obesity are far more likely not to enter a nursing home. Nor does the federal government bear the cost of informal caregivers, like the families in Louisiana who help take care of their older relatives with obesity and its impact on health.

Heart Disease, Stroke, cancer, and diabetes are the top four costliest conditions to treat in the U.S., all four have obesity as a risk factor. Obesity follows those four as the fifth costliest condition to treat in the U.S. Obesity affects 48% of people in Louisiana. The costs for seniors with obesity fall not just to the federal government in the Medicare program. For example, healthcare workers who care for people with obesity have higher rates of injury, those injuries take people out of their important work in hospitals and doctors’ offices.  Denying an opportunity for seniors and disabled people to be treated for obesity with medicine for weight loss sets up an untenable financial situation where Medicare costs are continuing to grow, and the people paying for Medicare are seeing a growing share of their tax dollars contributing to the cost of preventable diseases and states like Louisiana bear many of the cost and consequences.

The federal government accountants and actuaries who forecast view these medicines as a cost, not an investment in health that pays off with better health and less burden on state Medicaid. They consistently over-forecast the costs in Medicare relative to what actually happens in the market, particularly for medicines. Moreover, the federal government actuaries do not fully consider the costs back to the states as Medicaid takes on the cost of nursing home care, not Medicare. So, the assumption is treatment for obesity will be costly to the federal government, even if it may pay off for the country, and taxpayers continue to pay for the consequences of obesity on health, with is particularly serious with high rates of obesity in Louisiana.  However, providing treatment for weight loss for people with obesity, is a path to a more solvent and sustainable health system for the federal government and for Louisiana.

People with obesity are more likely to describe their health status as poor, and as the rate of obesity increases, so does the likelihood that a person reports poor health status. If the trajectory of obesity growth is reversed, this could have a significant positive impact on cost of healthcare and well-being in Louisiana. Helping seniors lose weight is an opportunity to improve their health, and that means they live not just longer but also better;  that is good for the federal government as well as the states.
