Port of Iberia Road Work, Airport Hangar and Flood-Control Projects Move Forward in New Iberia

NEW IBERIA, La. — A cluster of infrastructure projects is moving forward across Iberia Parish, including industrial-road work at the Port of Iberia, new investment at Acadiana Regional Airport and millions of dollars for a flood-control structure at Stumpy Bayou.

Updates presented to the Iberia Parish Council on October 28 show work underway to rehabilitate more than 1.5 miles of industrial roads at the Port of Iberia. Parish officials cited roughly $4.3 million for the current work and discussed plans for approximately $28 million in additional port-road improvements.

The road investment is significant because the Port of Iberia is in the middle of a new industrial cycle. The 4,000-acre complex supports fabrication, marine construction and energy-related businesses and sits beside Acadiana Regional Airport. Recent defense and advanced-manufacturing activity has increased the importance of moving heavy equipment and oversized loads efficiently through the industrial corridor.

The parish is also advancing aviation infrastructure. Council actions included a $1.45 million budget amendment for Phase 2 of a corporate bulk hangar project at Acadiana Regional Airport. Meeting records indicate the funding is structured with a 90 percent Federal Aviation Administration grant and a 10 percent Department of Defense grant.

Another $514,525 was budgeted for renovation of the airport’s air traffic control tower, while $115,000 was added for design work involving a community hangar and supporting infrastructure.

Those projects arrive as the New Iberia area attracts more aerospace and defense-related activity. The airport and neighboring Port of Iberia create an unusual combination of an 8,000-foot runway, marine access, industrial land, rail access and proximity to the future I-49 corridor.

The October 28 parish actions also included $2.83 million for the Stumpy Bayou flood-control structure. The project is part of a broader South-Central Louisiana effort involving Iberia, Vermilion and St. Mary parishes to reduce flooding caused when high tides and sustained southerly winds push water back into drainage canals.

Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority lists Stumpy Bayou as an active construction project with an overall project value of approximately $8.4 million. The planned structure is intended to block high-tide inflow while allowing the drainage system to move rainfall away from nearby communities more effectively.

Taken separately, road rehabilitation, a hangar, an air traffic control tower and a drainage structure can look like routine capital work. Taken together, they show the less-visible infrastructure spending required to support Iberia Parish’s industrial growth.

Large economic-development announcements depend on roads capable of carrying heavy loads, aviation facilities that can support corporate and industrial traffic, and drainage systems that protect businesses and neighborhoods from recurring flooding.

The Port of Iberia has long marketed itself as a manufacturing and marine-industrial center with direct access to the Gulf of Mexico. As defense, aerospace and energy projects expand around Acadiana, the condition of the surrounding infrastructure becomes increasingly important to whether the region can turn those announcements into sustained operations.

The latest parish actions do not represent one single megaproject. They represent something more basic: the roads, airport facilities and flood-control systems needed to support the next round of investment already beginning to take shape around New Iberia.
