Opinion: Keep the Credit Card Competition Act far from the Senate floor

At the end of last year, Congress came together to pass the 2023 omnibus spending bill. It included funding for 105 New Hampshire-specific projects like our food banks, our public libraries, and our local emergency services.

Additionally, the billions in funding for housing assistance, nutrition access, childcare, and help with utility bills are a lifeline for folks struggling to keep up with inflation.

But sometimes what stays out of a bill is almost as important as what winds up in it. Some members were pushing to add the Credit Card Competition Act (CCCA), which would have been disastrous for small businesses, their customers, and the local banks and credit unions that serve our communities.

LSU professor: Louisiana’s industrial emissions are an economic carbon capture opportunity

Carbon capture represents a significant economic opportunity for Louisiana, in part because the state already emits so much carbon dioxide, an LSU chemical engineering professor said Thursday.

“There’s a lot of byproduct CO2 that we just emit right now that if you had a way to sequester it here in Louisiana, it’s a pretty good situation economically,” said John Flake, the former chair of LSU’s chemical engineering department and a researcher with the H2theFuture “green” hydrogen initiative spearheaded by GNO Inc.

Flake made his remarks during a keynote presentation at TEC Next, a Baton Rouge industry technology and networking conference. The two-day event is hosted by the Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance and the Baton Rouge Area Chamber and sponsored by ExxonMobil.

Firehouse BBQ is suing governor for damages

In 2020 Governor John Bel Edwards issued his emergency rules through the Department of Health, mandating folks wear masks indoors. Firehouse BBQ went toe-to-toe with the governor’s office over the masks and capacity limits, which held up in court after a judge let the business stay open. Fast-forward two and a half years later and the fight doesn’t end there.

“So, that’s what we’re trying to do. You know, get some kind of accountability to what happens in an emergency situation. Showing them, hey you can’t shut people’s businesses down, you can’t damage the public in this way. You have to have some kind of limits to it,” said the owner, Danielle Bunch.

LOUISIANA RIGHT TO LIFE: Protect ALL Babies: Every Life is Valuable!

Join us for our Lighting the Way in a Post-Roe Louisiana Webinar series!

Our fourth Lighting the Way in a Post-Roe Louisiana webinar is coming up on Tuesday, January 24th at 7PM! We will be diving into discussion with personal testimonies about the currently most argued circumstances that society seeks to justify abortion: Situations in which a baby receives a "medically futile" diagnosis, and when a baby is conceived after sexual assault. Even in these sometimes difficult and also horrendous situations, every life is valuable - we need to work as a society to provide support to mothers who endure these pregnancies, and we need to recognize the value of that innocent human child and protect their life.

Among others, Dustin Bertrand will be sharing his story of being conceived in rape and how he has come to understand the preciousness of his own life and the heroism of his mom. His life and his mom's life matters!

Right now, Louisiana legislation does not protect those who are "medically futile" and we seek to change this. Also, Louisiana legislation does protect those conceived in rape but pro-abortion advocates and some of our legislators want to roll back this protection. Join us for a deeper discussion and learn what you can do!

Stay tuned and check back on ProLifeLouisiana.org/postroewebinars for information on the series.

Chairman Gurvich Responds to Biden's State of the Union Speech

BATON ROUGE, LA— Finish the job? Really? What a bizarre slogan for Joe Biden to use in his State of the Union speech last night. Irony seems to be a word with which Joe Biden is not familiar, but then there are quite a few words in the English language with which Joe Biden is not familiar.

Before moving on to briefly note the political lies, distortions,  and inaccuracies contained within his speech, allow me to conclude my personal attack on this most immoral and corrupt of all presidents, by noting that Joe Biden stole the slogan “finish the job” from one of the most important speeches ever given by Winston Churchill, in the darkest days of 1942. But then plagiarism is nothing new for this president, who has spent an entire career stealing bits and pieces of speeches given by earlier American and British politicians.

As for the content of the speech itself, we cannot accuse Joe Biden of hiding his misstatements and lies within it, because the entire speech is one long and ugly diatribe against truth and common sense. For the sake of brevity (and because so many other commentators have already demolished Joe Biden’s claims), his arguments for the success of his woke, wasteful, and tyrannical regime seem to focus on the logical fallacy that because things are not going as badly and as quickly as they were six months ago, Joe Biden’s presidency has been a great success.

To take credit for these “successes,” all one has to do is ignore the fact that under Donald Trump’s presidency prices were stable and your dollars were worth about fifteen percent more than they are today; wokeness and its bitter fruit were not official administration policy; the world was a much safer place in which to live, especially for the women of Afghanistan.

So prices keep rising and the cost of living keeps going up, as our children are subjected to Marxist claptrap in schools and the media incites race hatred among our people. Meanwhile, we are told to be ashamed of our country as millions of illegal migrants pour across its borders. And for this we can thank Joe Biden!

If you haven’t seen Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ response to Biden’s awful SOTU speech, you can watch below.

AG Landry releases ‘Protecting Innocence’ report on sexually explicit content in public libraries

BATON ROUGE, La. (KALB) - On Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2023, Attorney General Jeff Landry released his office’s “Protecting Innocence” report, detailing their findings of sexually explicit content in Louisiana’s public libraries and suggesting how libraries can address concerns and solutions to the ongoing debate.

“This is not a political issue,” said Landry. “This is about giving parents and officials the tools they requested to protect Louisiana’s children from sexually explicit material that is inappropriate for their age.”

The report comes on the heels of a contentious debate over sexual materials in public libraries statewide.

LMOGA: ExxonMobil, EnLink & CF Industries Announce Historic Partnership for Vermilion Parish

CF Industries has entered into the largest-of-its-kind commercial agreement with ExxonMobil to capture and permanently store up to 2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually from its manufacturing complex in Louisiana.

CF Industries is investing $200 million to build a CO2 dehydration and compression unit at its Donaldsonville, Louisiana, facility to capture CO2 to be transported and stored by ExxonMobil in secure geologic storage the company owns in Vermilion Parish.

JINDAL: Preserving Access to Rural Cardiac Care

Americans living in small rural communities take great pride in their hometowns. When it comes to their health care, America's 46 million rural residents want access to basic care within their own communities. Inflation, poor fiscal performance, and a lack of political leadership threaten that access. More than 500 U.S. hospitals are now at risk for closure, impeding access to care in many of these towns. The Biden administration's latest effort to save these hospitals forgoes a comprehensive strategy for a superficial solution that will result in less local care and worse outcomes for many communities.

On January 1, a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rule went into effect that allows a critical access hospital to convert to a "rural emergency hospital"—a new designation, defined as a facility which provides emergency and outpatient care, but must forgo inpatient care services and transfer patients within 24 hours to another hospital. This "catch-22" situation risks timely emergency services for rural patients and absolves state and local officials from fighting to preserve access to life-saving medical care.

Saving critical access hospitals that rural Americans depend on for time-sensitive cardiac or stroke care is key to keeping local economies strong and reducing the burden on overflowing metropolitan hospitals. Washington bureaucrats have yet to propose a comprehensive strategy to work with state and local leaders to engage with physicians to solve this problem.
